If you’re going to bathe like the Finns, you might as well talk like them. The Finns have a sauna vocabulary that is difficult and sometimes impossible to translate. For a quick lesson in Finnish sauna lexicon, check out these words to the wise. Then go forth and impress your friends and family.
But first, some tips on pronunciation. The following is not meant to serve as a complete pronunciation guide, but it will help to explain the lovely lilting sound of the Finnish language.
Each character is always pronounced the same way. That means words are pronounced the way they look and are spelled the way they sound.
Dotted vowels are also pronounced the same way wherever they appear. A dotted a sounds like the a in hat, and the dotted o sounds like the German o or the French eu. A close proximity in English is the u in fur.
Single characters are pronounced quickly and double ones are drawn out a bit. Think about the difference between the words boot and hut.
The stress is on the first syllable.
