This house, built by Colonel Roger Morris, was occupied at various times during the Revolution by George Washington and the British army. It became a tavern before it was bought by Stephen and Eliza Jumel, who lavishly decorated the house in the French Empire style. After having been widowed, she was married to former vice president Aaron Burr. Her divorce from him was granted on the day he died in 1836, and she continued to live here for the rest of her life.
