Tie-on curtains

Ties can be sewn into the top of the curtain in the same manner as the tabs of a looped heading and tied around a pole. Loose ties — made of ribbon, raffia, string, or ‘invisible’ fishing line — could be inserted through the eyelets of a pierced curtain instead of a pole.

Cased heading

A cased heading (also known as a slotted heading) is made by forming a channel or slot to take the curtain pole. At its simplest

4 Fold a double hem deep enough for the slot and frill (if wanted) and stitch on either side of the slot.

These stunning gauzy linen curtains have been given texture and interest by making horizontal pleats throughout their length. The pleats, which hang loose, are quite narrow at the top and increasingly wide as they approach the bottom. The curtains have cased headings at the top and drape on the floor this can be made at the very top of the curtain heading, or it can be placed just down from the top of the curtain so that a ruffle stands up above it. For this, fold a double hem deep enough for the slot and any frill, and first tack and then machine stitch along either side of the slot, in the same direction. The size of the slot is dictated by the diameter of the pole, which should fit easily, without the fabric being too tight or slack. You need a total fabric width of up to 2Yi times the length of the pole, plus turnbacks. Curtains with cased headings cannot be drawn back easily, so they are well suited to sheers or nets which are intended to hang down permanently or be draped to one side.

Other headings

For lightweight curtains, make a double hem at the top edge and simply sew small brass rings at intervals along it for threading onto a pole. Alternatively, you can buy special curtain clips – essentially rings with decorative clips at the bottom — which clip onto the top of the curtain ( 232—233).
