This 53-story tower rising straight up from Park Avenue actually begins at the second floor, as do many in this neighborhood that were built above the tracks and railroad yards serving neaby Grand Central Terminal. Union Carbide, its original tenant, moved out to suburban Connecticut in the 1980s. The Chase Manhattan Bank merged with J. P. Morgan & Co. and changed its name in 2001.
