Textured and smooth
You have to consider more than merely the colour and pattern of tiles when you are planning your scheme. The texture and finish of the tiles plays a considerable part in the overall look of the room. The warmth of rustic terracotta goes very well with unbleached muslin, wooden floors and coarse woollen throws. If you prefer a more streamlined effect, glitzy glass tiles can add some sparkle to stark modern schemes.

Shapes and sizes
Square and rectangular
Available in a variety of sizes, from tiny mosaic chips to large 30 x 30cm (12 x 12in) tiles. They are generally just over 4mm (Xin) thick. Square ceramic tiles are the most common type, but for variety in a run of basic tiles, arrange them in a diamond or brick-wall design, or mix with the same type in a contrasting colour. Tiles usually have square or bevelled edges; sometimes they are glazed on one or two edges so that you do not have to use edge trim. D
