This was originally one of a group of buildings (it was designated number seven of twelve) all representing the earliest use of reinforced concrete construction. They were built by Robert Gair for his corrugated box business. It is now condominium apartments, serving as an anchor for the emerging artists colony called DUMBO, an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. There are literally hundreds of clocks like this one all over the city”on buildings, on street corners, and in store windows”but chances are good that if you take a walk today, someone will still ask you, What time is it?
